ICT - middle

The youth of today are growing up in a digital world where technology is becoming an increasingly important part of their everyday lives. It is expected that this trend will continue, to the extent that technological literacy will become a functional requirement for both their professional and social lives.

The Primary School Curriculum promotes the use of ICT to enhance teaching and learning across all areas of the curriculum.

Our aim in Drumraney N.S. is to help the children to learn how to use ICT confidently and effectively so that they can benefit from the wide array of learning opportunities offered by modern technology and the Internet.

Note: Despite the vast range of opportunities provided by the use of technology, parents and teachers need to be mindful of the risks/challenges involved. We have a duty of care to help our children/students to use new digital technologies in a safe and responsible way. We need to teach our children/students how to be safe online and we need to reinforce internet safety warnings with them regularly. We endeavour to be involved in a monitoring process, whenever and wherever they are online.

Music Matters

We have been very busy exploring instruments from the orchestra with Lorcan Daly from the Music Outreach Programme. The children from 1st to 6th classes are also making great progress on the trumpet under the instruction of their teacher Gerry Lacey. We always look forward to our music days. Have a look at what we have being up to……

Maths Week 2016

Maths Week Certificate

Maths Week was a great success in Drumraney National School. We have been involved in coding, ‘3D Guess Who’ and many more exciting maths games during the week. We also took part in an Interactive Maths Show online where South African, Hungarian and Irish schools all worked out maths problems together.

Aistear is well and truly underway in the Junior Room! Aistear is the early childhood curriculum framework for all children from birth to six years in Ireland. It emphasises the importance of play based methodologies in supporting children’s learning and development. Children have an opportunity to explore many subject areas under a common theme. Our theme for this month is ‘The Zoo’. Groups of children explore this topic at various play stations, such as construction, role-play, small world, creative, water/sand and puzzles. It has become one of the highlights of our school day!!! You can learn more about Aistear by visiting www.curriculumonline.ie

Junior Room visit the Library

On Friday, 7th October Mrs Galvin and Mrs Gavigan took the Junior Room on a trip to Athlone Library. When we arrived we were greeted by Áine and were given a chance to look at and read some books. Most of the children were already members of the library but some became new members on the day. After we had chosen our favourite books to borrow, Áine brought us to the story mat where she read two books, ‘Sharing a Shell’ by Julia Donaldson and ‘Doing the Animal Bop’ by Lindsey Gardiner. We had great fun pretending to be the animals in the stories. We were so happy that we could bring home some books to read and are looking forward to choosing some more when we return soon!

Music Outreach Programme

Our pupils from Junior Infants to 6th class are taking part in a six week Music Outreach Programme. This initiative is being sponsored by Mullingar Pantomime Group, an independent group which operates in association with Mullingar Arts Centre.  Tutor, Lorcan Daly will introduce and demonstrate various instruments from the orchestra to the children and everybody will get a chance to try out all the instruments. The pupils will attend a concert on the 24th October when the programme finishes.

Roald Dahl Day

On Tuesday, 13th September, we celebrated Roald Dahl Day. This wonderful author would have celebrated his 100th birthday. We marked this special day by learning all about the life of Roald Dahl and taking part in some fun activities based on his books. The children are reading lots of Roald Dahl books at the moment and one of the class favourites is ‘The BFG’ which has recently been made into a movie!

Horse-Riding Lessons

All our pupils are taking part in a series of horse-riding lessons. The Junior Room took to the saddle for the first time on Friday, 2nd September! Most of the children had never been on a horse before so there was great excitement (and some trepidation!) as we made our way to Athlone Equestrian Centre in Moydrum. Claire and her staff were on hand to introduce the children to their ponies and get everyone set up before we took to the arena. We are now learning to control our ponies and we have even started trotting!!! Yee Haw!!
